Irish Blogger Party, July 10th, Market Bar, Dublin

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

Fellow bloggers and loyal readers, the Irish Blogger Party will be held in the Market Bar, Dublin, on the 10th of July. Anyone wishing to turn up can do so, this includes bloggers and readers (people might just be curious to meet who they read), and anyone wanting to bring friends along, feel free. This is an open event. It would actually be great to meet some of the readers. (If there are any!)

I won’t give a time for everyone to turn up, but I would say anytime after 6 would be great. Myself and the lads from BSD should be lashing away at the pints by then. We expect to be still there into the wee hours of the morning, or until the bar closes, whichever comes first.

Myself and Dick O’Brien should be there early, in the upstairs section of the bar. A reserved area cannot be made, as the bar do not do so on weekends. I will try and save an area for everyone, if I get there early enough.

I am not sure how many to expect, so if you could leave a comment here, or email me at gavin AT gavinsblog DOT com, and let me know that you are coming, and how many you might be taking along with you.

If you need any help in finding the venue email me, and I will send you mine or Dick’s mobile number. Here is the address of the bar.

The best directions I can give is to look for Hogans on Georges Street, go up the side street beside it, and the Market Bar will be on your left.

I hope you can all make it.

Carole Coleman video interview

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

According to my server and referral logs, RTE hack Carole Coleman has become something of celebrity. As I write, I rank third on Google and third on Yahoo for searching for her name.

Many people are looking to watch the interview, and word seems to be spreading. Almost everyone who visited today was looking to see the interview.

RTE must be getting deluged, the interview can be seen here in RealPlayer format.

According to my logs, some folks from RTE itself have even dropped in. What a crazy world blogging is.

Wohoo, my sitemeter has passed the 200,000 visitor mark. Another milestone in my 2 years of blogging.

Oil Wars

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

Back to this subject again Peter, Frank. Kevin Drum is talking about it again, and I just have to link to it.

He pointed to an article in the WP by one Paul Roberts author of “The End of Oil: On the Edge of a Perilous New World.”

Drum agrees with Roberts, noting:

My guess is that 50 years from now Gulf War I and Gulf War II will be considered merely the opening salvos in a single, longrunning conflict: the first of the large, modern wars fought primarily to protect the oil supplies of the West.

Our interest in oil is neither surprising nor reprehensible: without a steady supply of oil the world economy would collapse, bringing untold misery to billions. What is reprehensible is that even after 9/11 made our oil vulnerability as stunningly clear as 3,000 dead can make it, we still have no national effort in place to try and reduce our oil dependency. Literally nothing.

The only thing I’m not sure about is what this says about the Bush administration. Are they so cluelessly ideological that they simply never even consider non-market/non-military solutions to energy security? Or are they really so venal that they’re not willing to consider any other solution?

Responses will be forwarded to Mr Drum himself.

Update: There is also an interview with Roberts in Mother Jones.

Keith Matthew Maupin beheaded?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

News is circulating that Keith Matthew Maupin has also been executed, these executions are becoming an all too frequent occurence. Why the new tack? A video or pictures of the murder will likely become available soon, but is this propaganda counter-productive?

Oceans on Mars?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

The news media has largely forgotten about those two Rovers on Mars, but they are making some huge discoveries, including the above structure. It was noted:

Despite detailed inspection with the microscopic imager, “we have not got this thing figured out yet,” Squyres admitted at a press conference at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, California on Friday. “I don’t know how these things formed, and it’s driving me nuts!”

Some very interesting science being done on Mars.

Black Line goes pink

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

Peter is messing with his blog templates, and I have to say I like the new one. The more traditional blog format makes it easier to read. A move to WordPress or MT would be a good move though.

Mobile phones rot your balls

And the funniest headline of the week award goes to: El Reg, for this corker:

Mobile phones rot your balls:
Hello Moto. Goodbye Mojo

I actually laughed out loud to that one.
