That election thing

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Can we now stop referring to Bertie Ahern as ‘Bertie’, but instead as Ahern or Mr Ahern? Do we refer to ANY other politician by their first name?

It seems to be part of the whole ‘sure Bertie is one of us like, a common working man’.

No. Ahern is not a common working man. Unless you recently received a ‘dig out’ of £122,000 from people (some of whom weren’t even your friends), or spent £29,000 (which is several thousand more than most people earned in a year at the time) on fixtures and fittings for your home.

Or maybe we should start referring to everyone by their first name. Enda, Pat, Trevor, Mary, Gerry, sure aren’t they all workers like ourselves?

So this was the surprise announcement Microsoft promised. It does look impressive, a la Minority Report. But will it blue screen?

Google Streetview

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Unveiled yesterday. Here is a rather nice view from the Golden Gate bridge. They have also included streel level coverage of Denver, Miami, New York and Las Vegas. I really like the interface – you pick up the little figure and drop him/her whereever you want to see the street level view. You can then pan around within the picture, and move it back or forward along the road by clicking the arrow.

This only seems to work on Google Maps US, which means you need to add “&gl=us” at the end of the url to see the streetview option.

Evil Google geniuses are taking over the planet.

Blogoscoped has more – and mapplets too.

That would include (in no particular order) thinking out loud, Twenty, Damien, Winds and Breezes, Kevin, In Fact Ah, John Breslin, Keith, UI, Slugger, Bumpf, Free Stater, Irish Eagle, Palgano, Joe, Karlin, Reality, Midnight Court, Rick, Sarah, Tom, Tony, Bernie, Branedy, Donal, Eamonn, EirePreneur, Dossing, Rymus, Tom.

I have returned, blogging will begin again in earnest (hopefully). Five year anniversary soon too!

Thestory.ie will continue, albeit restricted largely to finance and new media.

Return…

Friday, May 4th, 2007

I have been mulling a return to gavinsblog since I left it back in November. Thestory.ie has been doing well, though my posting is still lacking form or consistency.

My thoughts are to spin thestory into a new media/finance blog, and return gavinsblog to a mainly politics/personal weblog.

Interestingly the traffic here has remained relatively static, so it still seems to have some sway with Google.

In any event, any return shall occur after my exams.
