Hi Gavin,
I am a final year art and design student in GMIT, Galway and I am basing my studio work on abandoned sites in Ireland, focussing primarily on 'ghost' estates, a significant marker of contemporary Ireland. What really draws me to them is the eerie soullessness of these estates, the very fact that they have not even been occupied therefore these walls have no stories to tell! We would normally associate an abandoned building with previous life stories but it feels quite strange that these 'ghost' dwellings have almost nothing to show for their very existence!

An excellent post. Well done!

I was lucky enough to jump on the Affordable Housing bandwagon before it became a mess of a system, so have paid a very low price for my beautiful apartment. I have so much pity for those who paid over €500,000 two years ago for houses that can't sell for €400,000 now, and it looks to get worse.

Scary indeed.
The whole country is going to be littered with these 21st century monuments to the credit binge we had the past few years.
you can see from daft what used to be villages and small towns now have enough properties for sale that would have housed the entire population of the same area a decade ago..
If we wake up to whats going on in our Country at least we will have learned a lesson. An expensive lesson for sure, but hopefully we can move forward in a more sensible direction

Drove through Rathcormac this evening, the place is littered with 'For Sale' signs. First time I've seen signs saying "First offer of €215000 secures".

I'm not surprised half the estates in East Cork are empty. If you're working near the city, you get a place no more than a half hour drive from the city for about €250,000. These places are over an hours drive out and are the same price with fuck all amenities and no services.

Nice work Gavin - it's a really eerie feeling isn't it to walk around these empty places, even when the developer is taking the trouble to keep the grass cut and all? Must pop into a few of these places around Soth and West Cork meself and take some photos for thepropertypin. db.
