One way mission to Mars

Should we send a mission to Mars that is only one way? A soldier is volunteering to go.
I would prefer that a self-sustaining colony were created. It seems rather futile to go with no hope of return.

A self-sustaining colony would be a good way to go, but I’m not sure if the finances will be available. Alternatively humanity could go the way of Man Plus, the novel by Frederik Pohl, and revamp the body using technology so it can survive on the Martian surface. Okay, it’s only a novel…

It does not surprise that someone wants to take a one way trip away from this world, especially a soldier who has served in Afghanistan!
