My experience as an Election Judge in Baltimore County

Avi Rubin [via Slashdot] with his thoughts on the new e-voting machines used in Baltimore. Excellent reading. It shows huge problems with the smart cards being used – if only Cullen would listen. Rubin concludes:

I continue to believe that the Diebold voting machines represent a huge threat to our democracy. I fundamentally believe that we have thrown our trust in the outcome of our elections in the hands of a handful of companies (Diebold, Sequoia, ES&S) who are in a position to control the final outcomes of our elections. I also believe that the outcomes can be changed without any knowledge by election judges or anyone else. Furthermore, meaningful recounts are impossible with these machines.

I also believe that we have great people working in the trenches and on the front lines. These are ordinary people, mostly elderly, who believe in our country and our democracy, and who work their butts off for 16 hours, starting at 6 a.m. to try to keep the mechanics of our elections running smoothly. It is a shame that the e-voting tidal wave has a near hypnotic effect on these judges and almost all voters. I believe that after today’s experience, I am much better equipped to make the arguments against e-voting machines with no voter verifiability, but I also have a great appreciation for how hard it is going to be to fight them, given how much voters and election officials love them.

We were not allowed to use cell phones or access email all day. On my way home from the polls, I called my voicemail at work. I had messages and requests for interviews from ABC News, the Baltimore Sun, the Washington Post, Wired News, CNN, several radio stations and the New York Times. So, this issue is not going away. Over the next few days, I’ll be discussing my experience and probably sparring with the usual suspects in the various media outlets. My biggest fear is that super Tuesday will be viewed as a big success. By all accounts, everyone at my precinct felt that way. The more e-voting is viewed as successful, the more it will be adopted, and the greater the risk when someone decides to actually exploit the weaknesses of these systems.

It’s now almost midnight, and I’ve been up since 5:00 a.m. I’m falling asleep as I type this, so I will end here. Good night.

Say Goodbye to Hollywood

« Say Goodbye to Hollywood » is a song that Eminem has dedicated to his fans. A song that expresses the sour aftertaste of fame. A song in which he offers us a retrospective of the drama that happened when he caught Kim cheating with John Guerra. An incident that still hurts him, but that also helped him to become more mature. Eminem has understood a lot through his mistakes. He has understood that he could lose everything if he was put in jail. He didn’t want Hailie to suffer from his own mistakes and he decided to slow down :

NASA announce evidence of water on Mars

Ongoing NASA press conference, on as I write, Slashdot quote “Drenched with Water”:

They are saying that the crater that the second rover has landed in has convincing evidence that it was once drenched or covered in liquid water. They cite the tiny spherules, odd holes in the rocks, sulfur in the spectrometric analyses, and evidence of an iron sulfate hydrate (a hydrate is a chemical compound which includes water molecules in the crystal lattice).

Update: Astonishing! Lots of salt, it sounds like there were large seas on Mars. “Significant liquid water”.

Update: They plan to send the Rover a good distance, to examine a particular crater – it might not make it.

Update: “We have nailed a new aspect” How extensive is this evidence of ancient ground water? “How long did water soak the rock?”

“Now we finally have examples of stuff we really want to bring home”

Update: “We cannot tell you if these rocks were laid down in a pool of water or sea” “The best way to get age is to bring a rock back”

Spirit will travel 100 metres a day, and take up to several weeks before it reaches ‘Endurance’ crater.

10 Tech Trends to Bet On

Fortune magazine list out the top 10 tech trends for the future, some interesting ones in there. Wi-Fi sounds like it really should not be in there – I was writing about that technology 3 years ago – and I am sure it figured back then in other tech trends to bet on.

1. Smart Dust/RFID (Tiny wireless sensors start monitoring the nation’s food, workplaces and welfare)
2. Convergence, music, computers, media etc.
3. China ruling technology
4. Open source becomes mainstream
5. Ebay gets bigger
6. Wi-fi everywhere
7. HDTV gets cheap
8. Subscription – lots of services in one bill
9. VoIP
10. Ads on the net really do work

Square Dance

Eminem is a political rapper and Square Dance is a political song. After the release of the Eminem Show, Slim Shady is back and ready to piss off the Bush administration. Square Dance has an ill rythm and something chaotic inside of it. It makes you feel the world disorder. Although the song has some funny parts, it contains a serious message. It is a clear protest against President Bush’s policy.

The Pentagon's Weather Nightmare

So the Pentagon is taking global warming seriously? I have been keeping an eye out for stories related to this issue – I remember Frank saying that a large number scientists don’t believe global warming is happening – I just wonder what percentage of the scientific community believes it. How many scientists are there in the world anyway?

It seems this article created quite a bit of controversy. Stephen Pollard has picked it up here.

Looks like the Observer played this one up just a bit.

Odd European out

The Economist had some interesting stories last week – among them a very interesting one on Germany’s economy, and another on the EU’s relationship with Russia. The one on Russia is available free here.

As for Germany the Economist estimates some interesting figures.

Germany used to be one of Europe’s richest nations. In the late 1980s its GDP per head was 20% higher than the average of the European Union. But estimates by the Economist suggest that Germany’s GDP per head fell 1%below the EU average last year (measured at purchasing-power parity, to take account of differences in prices). Only four of the EU’s 15 members now have a lower income per head.

Amazing stuff. The model of the Germany economy can no longer be sustained given its ageing population and its somewhat outdated welfare system. But is the same true for the rest of Europe? We always hear about how the US economy is always outperforming Europe – but no, read this:

Yet in many ways Europe excluding Germany looks a bit like America. For example, over the past decade GDP per head in the rest of the EU grew by an average of 2.3% – even faster than America’s 2.1% average growth. European business are often accused if being inefficient and unprofitable, hobbled by high wage costs and red tape. Yet a new study by Goldman Sachs finds that, while corporate America’s rate of return on capital is twice that in Germany, the rate of return in the rest of the EU is even higher. And though it is true that European labour markets are in general less flexible than America’s, Europe outside of Germany has been creating just as many jobs as America. Over the past decade, employment has risen by an average of only 0.2% a year in Germany, against a rate of 1.3% a year in the rest of the EU, exactly the same pace of increase as in America.

What? The Economist praising the rest of Europe? Fascinating figures though. C’mon Germany, get your ass in gear!

Mission to Planet Rumsfeld: James Wilsdon

James Wilsdon of thinkthank Demos believes that the recent US enthusiasm for space is down to old fashioned reasons – to maintain its dominance in space technology over Russia and China. He discusses all the recent developments, the new GPS system to be developed by the ESA, Russia and China, and possible US plans to ditch the Outer Space Treaty.

To me at least, all this stuff is fairly old hat – I was only discussing many of these issues three weeks ago with my brother. We agreed on all the points made in this article – and discussed future possible warfare scenarios on the basis of future technology. But rather than base it on the decision to go to Mars – we asked ourselves one question – What would it take to remove the US as the pre-eminent power in the world?

A space based weapons platform was one we considered , along with many others. But space will play a crucial role in future conflict – interesting to find Demos coming to the same conclusion, perhaps just a bit late.
